Understanding the Most Common Causes of Chronic Low Back Pain

Updated: 1 day ago

Are you one of the millions worldwide affected by low back pain? While the cause of the discomfort may sometimes seem like an mystery, chronic low back pain typically stems from identifiable sources. Understanding these common causes is the first step towards effective management and relief.

In this article we are discussing chronic low back back pain, which is pain that has developed over time, meaning months to years. Low back pain that occurs suddenly, sometimes overnight or after strenuous activity, is acute low back pain and may have a very different cause than chronic back pain.

1Degenerative Disc Disease: As we age, the discs between our vertebrae naturally degenerate, leading to a condition known as degenerative disc disease. This can result in reduced disc height, loss of disc hydration, and even disc herniation, all of which contribute to chronic low back pain.

2. Facet Joint Dysfunction: The facet joints are small joints located between each vertebra that provide stability and enable movement in the spine. Facet joint dysfunction, often caused by arthritis or injury, can result in chronic low back pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility.

3. Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: The sacroiliac joint connects the sacrum (triangular bone at the base of the spine) to the pelvis. Dysfunction in this joint can lead to chronic low back pain, typically felt on one, but sometimes both sides of the lower back or buttocks.

4. Spinal Stenosis: Spinal stenosis occurs when the spaces within the spine narrow, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. This condition often develops gradually with age and can cause chronic low back pain, as well as tingling, numbness, and weakness in the legs.

5. Herniated Disc: A herniated disc, also known as a slipped or ruptured disc, occurs when the soft inner core of a disc leaks out through the tougher outer layer. This can irritate nearby nerves, leading to chronic low back pain and possibly radiating pain down the legs (sciatica). Click for Treatments of Herniated Discs in Sacramento

6. Spondylolisthesis: Spondylolisthesis occurs when a vertebra slips out of place and onto the vertebra below it. This displacement can compress spinal nerves and cause chronic low back pain, as well as radiating pain and numbness in the legs. Click for Treatments of Spondylolisthesis in Sacramento

7: Osteoarthritis, commonly referred to as wear-and-tear arthritis, can affect the joints of the spine, leading to chronic low back pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility, especially in older individuals.

8. Injuries and Trauma: Traumatic events such as car accidents, falls, or sports injuries can cause structural damage to the spine, resulting in chronic low back pain if not properly treated and rehabilitated.

9. Muscle Strain and Sprain: One of the most prevalent causes of chronic low back pain is muscle strain or sprain. This can occur due to improper lifting techniques, sudden movements, or overexertion during physical activities. Over time, repetitive strain on the muscles can lead to chronic pain if left untreated.

10. Poor Posture and Alignment Issues: Maintaining proper posture is crucial for spinal health. Poor posture, whether due to slouching, prolonged sitting, or improper lifting techniques, can place undue stress on the spine, leading to chronic low back pain over time.
